I purchased this rack on and got the best deal out there for $340 and free shipping. I would have gone with the 916XT, but unfortunately, my car only had a capacity for a class II hitch, so 917XT it was!
I lamented for days over the Thule 917XT, Yakima Holdup and Saris Cycle On Pro. All of the racks have disadvantages and advantages depending on your application. I chose the Thule for a bunch of reasons, but the one which made the biggest difference was being able to load/unload different style bikes in seconds(Mountain, Beach, BMX, Larger Children's bikes) without having to adjust the front wheel mount. The Yakima seemed to be a one size fits all with the flip down tire mount which didn't seem to be what I needed for my application given it would be me and one of my kids bikes which range in all different sizes. I liked the Yakima's compact size when folded up, but I also had concerns should the mount wiggle loose and having it damage my car. The Saris Cycle On has an excellent price point and great hitch lock/tightening feature that I really liked, BUT, if I was carrying anything less than a 26in bike, I had to adjust the front wheel mount by unscrewing bolts and moving the mount to the smaller adjustment to accomodate the smaller tire up to a 20in. This was too much work for what I needed and I would have potentially been changing this every other day.
All three racks have a no touch frame grab bar, that only makes contact with the front tire. This is invalueable if you cherish your bikes finish OR have an expensive bike where you could potentially damage the top tube when using similar racks like the Yakima Stickup or Thule Doubletrack which are about $100 cheaper. I also liked the fact that I could adjust the angle and position of the tire grab bar.Read more ›|||We seleected the Thule hitch mount bike carrier because it kept the bikes from bumping into each other or my beloved CRV. It is a bit pricey (and this was the cheapest I have found) but the bikes are secure and ride safely. It comes with good locks as well. I love that I can access the back of my vehicle because the mount folds down.
Worth the money if you are fond of your bikes, your car or both. There are no scratches on any of them with this bike carrier.|||This is a fantastic product that is very easy to use. Mounting and dismounting bicycles on the back of my vehicle is now a breeze. I highly recommend this product to any serious cyclist.|||This rack is pretty awesome. I have a bike without a straight top-tube so attaching a bike by the wheels is clutch. I think that using the wheels to attach a bike to the rack is the ONLY way to go.
The rack is super solid and you can lock the rack to your hitch and you can use the arms that hold the bike down to lock the bikes to the rack. Granted, you can take off the front wheel from the bike and then you could at least get the bike, and probably get the wheel too, but it will at least stop someone from grabbing and going. You can get a cable lock to really secure it.
You can adjust the position of each bike holder to balance the bikes center of gravity, or move the racks forward and backwards if the rack hits your car when you fold it up to stow it. The rack is expensive, but I believe if you spend the money up front and get a really nice rack right away, you won't have to spend the money again. This rack is a good, solid buy.|||I've owned Thule racks before. I had to buy this one due to purchasing a vehicle with a smaller toe hitch. These racks are easy to use - takes seconds to get your bike on and off the rack and locking the rack with your bikes on it is a breeze. It seems to be a well thought out system and very user friendly. I also like that when your bike is on the rack, there's no pressure on the bike frame.
